POET - Pre-hospital Obstetric Emergencies Training Course

POET Course Overview ...

Syllabus The theoretical components of the course will be delivered via an interactive web-based programme, which candidates will be able to undertake at their own pace. Candidates will be required to complete the on-line learning component and pass an MCQ prior to attending the 2-day instructor-led programme. The 2-day programme consists of interactive case discussions, hands-on skill stations and scenario-based small group learning. Final course assessment will be by scenario-based OSCEs.

Subjects covered will include:

  • an introduction to the obstetric patient
  • emergencies in early pregnancy
  • emergencies in late pregnancy and delivery
  • post-delivery emergencies
  • management of non-obstetric emergencies in the pregnant patient
  • Duration and Location The POET course is 2 Days and is currently held in Manchester. Details of course dates can be found below.

    Who Can Apply? Advanced-life support level pre-hospital practitioners, including Paramedics, Doctors and Nurses.

    Instructors are selected using specified criteria during a provider course. Following selection instructor potential candidates then undergo a Generic Instructor Course and are assessed as instructor candidates on two provider courses before becoming a full instructor.

    CPD Points System If a doctor finds that a course (or part of a course) is useful, they can count it as CPD with one CPD credit for one hour of relevant educational activity (excluding meal breaks etc). If a doctor attends a course and finds that is was of no educational value, it should not be counted as CPD. Please contact your college for further information.

    Re-certification is required after 4 years by completing a full POET course. POET course dates and venues can be found here.

    Resit Regulations for both written and practical components of the POET course are listed below;

    Written Tests - These are now all carried out online via the VLE at any course centre under the supervision of the co-ordinator. Only one resit is allowed. This must be completed within 6 weeks of the course

    Practical Tests - 1 immediate retest on the course (if time permits). 1 further resit at another course within 6 months

    Scenario/Moulage/OSCE - 1 immediate retest on the course (if time permits). 1 further resit at another course within 6 months
