The course is taught with combined groups from all specialties, with all benefitting from a common structured approach. Specifically, those in emergency medicine will gain a structured approach to acute psychiatric emergencies and an essential toolkit of techniques.

Those in psychiatry and mental health services will gain from learning about psychiatric emergencies using the structured techniques of emergency medicine, and gain from shared learning with acute care colleagues.

Advanced Paediatric Life Support

(APLS)

This advanced paediatric life support programme is for those from:
  • A medical, nursing, ECP, ODP or RTO background.
  • Physician’s Assistants for which APLS is relevant to their working practice.
  • RTOs from any background who work in a paediatric hospital are eligible to take the programme. However, RTOs who work in a non-paediatric hospital, with any other background to those already listed, can send an application to the Working Group detailing their paediatric practice and each of these cases will be considered individually. The Working Group also recommend that nurses are senior staff nurses and above.
  • Experienced level 5 staff nurses.

Advanced Paediatric Life Support Recertification

(APLSRC)

This Advanced Paediatric Life Support recertification programme is for those candidates who have already undertaken the APLS course and after four years wish to recertify.
  • Candidates have six months after their APLS certificate has expired to do this APLS Recertification course. Those whose certificates have expired more than six months must undertake the full APLS course.
  • All recertifying candidates must read the manual and complete the APLS e-modules.
  • ALSG offer an amnesty for candidates who fulfil certain criteria: practicing APLS regularly and working in the following roles - on-call general paediatrics; paediatric intensive care; paediatric anaesthesia; general or paediatric emergency department.

Facilitation Course

(FAC)

The purpose of this education programme is to prepare instructors to teach on the Child Protection Recognition and Response (CPRR) course and the SAFE care closer to home programme.  The selection process for the course is described below: There are two potential routes to becoming a CPRR trainer:
  • Route 1: If you are a consultant, associate specialist or named or designated nurse then you should read this document which explains the full process.
  • Route 2: As an ST4-ST7 in paediatrics, if you complete a CPRR provider course, you may be nominated to become a CPRR trainer. If you are recommended, then you would follow this process.

SAFE Instructor selection

There are also two potential routes for becoming a SAFE instructor:

  • Route 1: Existing ALSG instructors with an appropriate clinical background may self-nominate to convert to becoming a SAFE instructor. This process involves completion of the SAFE e-modules. There is no requirement to attend the Facilitation course.
  • Route 2: During the SAFE provider courses, the faculty will review candidates using a structured matrix to assess their suitability for instructor training.

Candidates who are recommended will need to complete the Facilitation course.

Managing Medical and Obstetric Emergencies and Trauma

(mMOET)

Check that you are eligible before applying:

mMOET is aimed at the following grades and specialites:
  • Senior clinicians from multi-disciplinary specialties managing the care of pregnant women with medical emergencies and/or trauma.
  • Obstetricians, anaesthetists, specialist high risk/HDU midwives, physicians and emergency doctors and trauma specialists. Midwives can attend the course as an observer.
  • In obstetrics and gynaecology, Professors, Consultants, Staff Grades, Associate Specialists and Trust Doctors are automatically eligible. In a training grade candidates should have Part 2 MRCOG.
  • Anaesthetic candidates should have FRCA or equivalent
  • Staff and Associate Specialist doctors working regularly in obstetric anaesthesia are also eligible irrespective of FRCA status.
  • Emergency Medicine candidates should be Consultant, SpR or staff grade with a special interest in obstetric emergencies and trauma.
