    • This advanced paediatric life support programme is for those from a medical, nursing, ECP, ACP, ODP, RTO background for which APLS is relevant to their working practice.

    • Physician’s Assistants and Critical Care Practitioners for which APLS is relevant to their working practice, are eligible.

    • We strongly mandate that candidates have already acquired basic paediatric life support skills on a course such as PLS (or local equivalent) before applying for and attending an APLS course as it is an advanced course that assumes this level of knowledge and skills and builds on these to develop advanced skills and leadership.

    This Advanced Paediatric Life Support recertification programme is for those candidates who have already undertaken the APLS course and after four years wish to recertify.

    • Candidates have six months after their APLS certificate has expired to do this APLS Recertification course. Those whose certificates have expired more than six months must undertake the full APLS course.
    • All recertifying candidates must read the manual and complete the APLS e-modules.
    • ALSG offer an amnesty for candidates who fulfil certain criteria: practicing APLS regularly and working in the following roles - on-call general paediatrics; paediatric intensive care; paediatric anaesthesia; general or paediatric emergency department.

    From 1 November 2024 the APLS recertification course eligibility criteria are changing as part of the update to 7e:

    • All candidates must have completed an APLS course before and be no more than 6 months out of date.  Please note: The recertification course is testing the retention of the APLS content and is not a teaching course for those whose knowledge and skills have lapsed.
    • Medical candidates must be level ST4 or above and be currently practising in acute paediatrics regularly.
    • Nursing and AHP candidates must have done a minimum of 2 full 2-day APLS courses and be currently practising in acute paediatrics regularly before they can apply to do the APLS recertification course.
    • All candidates must confirm on their application form that they have a paediatric BLS certificate (no older than 12 months) and that they meet the eligibility rules to be eligible to attend.

    PLS exists to teach the practical procedures necessary for the initial effective management of childhood emergencies. The 1-day PLS course is generally run on an in-hospital basis and ALSG has course centres throughout the UK. The course comprises of lectures, skills stations, workshops and resuscitation imulations.

    Candidates who have taken the course include Doctors, Nurses, RTOs and all professions allied to medicine (PAMS).

    This Pre-Hospital Paediatric Life Support programme’s objective is to improve the emergency care of children, concentrating on the initial critical minutes prior to arriving at hospital and is suitable for those from the following backgrounds:

    • Medical
    • Paramedic

    The ALSG Managing Major Incidents family of courses includes MIMMS and HMIMMS.

    The MIMMS education programme is for those from a medical, nursing, or paramedic background.

    This HMIMMS education programme is available for anyone managing aspects of a major incident from a hospital perspective.

    Candidates who have taken the course include Consultants, Emergency Planning Officers and Medical Officers.

    Team Provider MIMMS exists to teach the nature and management of the major incident and how to deliver the medical support needed. The 1-day Team Provider course is aimed at staff who will form part of the major incident team from their hospital. The course is taught through lectures, skills and workshops.

    Team Provider HMIMMS exists to give hospital staff the knowledge to plan and train for major incidents. The 1 day Team Provider course is aimed at staff members who will be involved in the major incident team within the hospital. The course is designed to take into account the hospital plan in use at the candidates hospital and is therefore mainly hospital based.

    mMOET is aimed at the following grades and specialities:

    • Senior clinicians from multi-disciplinary specialties managing the care of pregnant women with medical emergencies and/or trauma.
    • Obstetricians, anaesthetists, physicians and emergency doctors and trauma specialists. Midwives can attend the course as an observer.
    • In obstetrics and gynaecology, Professors, Consultants, Staff Grades, Associate Specialists and Trust Doctors are automatically eligible. In a training grade candidates should have Part 2 MRCOG.
    • Anaesthetic candidates should have FRCA or equivalent
    • Staff and Associate Specialist doctors working regularly in obstetric anaesthesia are also eligible irrespective of FRCA status.
    • Emergency Medicine candidates should be Consultant, SpR or staff grade with a special interest in obstetric emergencies and trauma.
    • Obstetric physician candidates should be grade ST5 or above.

    This pre-obstetric emergency training programme is suitable for:

    • Advanced life support level practitioners
    • Paramedics
    • Doctors
    • Nurses

    Candidates who have taken the course include Paramedics, Community Nurses and GPs.

    This Child Protection: Recognition and Response course has been developed for, and is aimed at ST1-ST3:

    • Doctors in training, mainly in paediatrics, emergency medicine and in general practice.
    • Specialty trainees may attend dependent on the availability of spaces.
    • Paediatric specialty dentists may attend courses with appropriate specialty dentistry trainers (see list of dates on website).
    • Candidates should also have had some practical safeguarding experience within the NHS.

    Candidates who have taken this course include GPs and specialty trainees and specialists in paediatric dentistry.

    • Candidates should be from a medical or advanced practitioner background, who autonomously assess and manage acutely ill patients.
    • Medical candidates  - must be ST3 and above, while advanced practitioners must fulfill roles on the middle grade rota in Emergency Departments or Acute Medical Assessment units.
    • Nurses not in an AP role can apply to attend a MedicALS course as an observer— when booking please state clearly that you want to observe only.

    Train the trainer: a practical exploration. Course candidates should be staff who routinely care for tracheostomy patients, who intend to teach tracheostomy care in their workplace.

    This acute psychiatric emergencies programme is for those trainees in both emergency medicine and psychiatry as well as nursing and other allied health professionals that are involved in crisis care for mental health.

    The course is taught with combined groups from all specialties, with all benefitting from a common structured approach. Specifically, those in emergency medicine will gain a structured approach to acute psychiatric emergencies and an essential toolkit of techniques.

    Those in psychiatry and mental health services will gain from learning about psychiatric emergencies using the structured techniques of emergency medicine, and gain from shared learning with acute care colleagues.

    This Neonatal, Adult and Paediatric Safe Transfer and Retrieval programme is those from a medical, nursing, paramedic background. Before attending the NAPSTaR course, you must also have successfully completed an appropriate advanced life support course relevant to your specialty.

    The purpose of this education programme is to prepare instructors to teach on the Child Protection Recognition and Response (CPRR) course and the Acute Psychiatric Emergencies (APEx) courses.  The selection process for the courses are described below:

    There are two potential routes to becoming a CPRR instructor:

    • Route 1: Put forward as having instructor potential at the end of your CPRR course.
    • Route 2: Self-nomination with the recommendation of a senior colleague or working group member.

    The route for becoming an APEx instructor:

    • During the APEx provider courses, the faculty will review candidates using a structured matrix to assess their suitability for instructor training. Candidates who are recommended will need to complete the Facilitation course.

    The ATLS course is suitable for:

    • FY2, CT1-2, ST1-2, SAS Grades and suitably trained advanced practitioners.

    ATLS Recertification is a 1-day course held at ALSG for those wishing to recertify after four years. The ATLS Amnesty is also 1-day and is for ATLS providers (who are a UK resident and Consultant level) wishing to reinstate their ATLS status.
